How do you make a class immutable, and why does it matter?

Final class, final fields, no mutators, defensive copies of mutable components in and out, no this escape during construction. Records do most of it. It matters because immutable objects are thread-safe without locks, safe as map keys, and cannot be corrupted after validation.
